7th INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY

A community celebration that will take place at the
Italian Cultural Centre (14230 - 133 Avenue - Edmonton Alberta) on
Saturday, February 20, 2010 from 1:30 to 3:45 p.m.
This special celebration will see IHLA schools and communities gather
together to celebrate their languages and cultures. We will display
community language programs, performances and demonstrations of language
learning of our students, in several different languages, from Punjabi
to Ukrainian, to Spanish, to Polish and Russian, Filipino and many more.
The
International Mother Tongue Day
was instituted by the United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and first
celebrated in Paris on February 21, 2000. The day’s goals include:
• Promotion and awareness of value of all languages in the world
• Recognition of all cultures that languages represent and support to
development of policies and initiatives that assist all languages in the
world to maintain their identity and continue to prosper
• Promotion of mutual respect through a deeper understanding of ways of
thinking and living and living that are represented by the different
languages in the world
IHLA is proud to organize and sponsor this very exciting event each
year, for its member schools and the entire community, to share the
richness and the variety of languages and cultures spoken and learnt in
our province.
