Ivan Franko School of Ukrainian Studies:
The Ivan Franko School of Ukrainian Studies (Kursy Ukrainiznavstva) was started in Edmonton in September 1956. It was named after Ukraine’s second greatest poet.
The aim of the Kursy Ukrainiznavstva is to give Ukrainian-speaking youth a deeper knowledge of Ukrainian language, literature, history, geography, culture and music so that they identify with their Ukrainian culture and develop a greater sense of pride.
From 1983 to date, classes are held at the St. John’s Orthodox Cathedral auditorium. Classes are held Saturday morning from 9:00-12:00. The curriculum is divided into four school years.
Kursy Ukrainiznavstva has been an accredited Alberta private school since 1959, granting high school credits for Ukrainian Language Arts 10, 20, and 30. Many Alberta certified teachers and principals are on staff. Our school is run by a non-profit community organization which is called The Society of Ukrainian Studies of Alberta.
Students are provided with opportunities to supplement their studies with supplemental cultural activies, both within the school and the community. Since 2001 the graduating class visits Ukraine during spring break. We have been members of IHLA since 2004.
